"New User Registration" intruder into a dormant site

  • I have received an email from WordPress that I don’t really understand:

    “New user registration on your site <my sitename>:

    Username: ReedDstkjzrdq

    E-mail: [email protected]”

    The site is effectively dormant – it has a “Maintenance Mode” plugin active, and has had for a long time, as I haven’t finished it and have left it in that state for a while. So it shouldn’t be possible for anyone to interact with it. I assume that the email is the result of some kind of ‘bot’ getting into iPage/Wordpage but I can’t see that any problem has been caused in the host iPage or WordPress.

    Can I somehow tell whether my iPage or WordPress has been seriously compromised by this “New user registration” please? Where should I look? What should I look for? How do I de-register this intruder?

    I don’t really understand what has happened, so any comments gratefully received.
