I’ve maintained my wordpress blog for 6 years, and I’ve always had “membership: anyone can register” unchecked in my WordPress general settings.

However, today I got an email notification that a new user had registered, which scared me since I’ve never had this happen before. I immediately logged in, deleted the user, and changed my wordpress password.

Is there some other preference I need to adjust to ensure that random people can’t register on my site?

  • The fact you received notification causes me to think someone had somehow simply managed to get your site’s registration link to work even though you do not offer it, and I would not be too concerned about that happening just once. Nevertheless, I might still possibly change my database password (two places, you might already know) as well as the password/s for any FTP/SFTP account/s just in case someone has managed to get past WordPress and go directly to your server.
