I’m fairly new to designing Websites in WordPress and I think your plugin might be what I’m looking for. I have a few related questions that I hope you can help me with…

Currently, the client’s website is hosted on a temporary domain and they also have a live site at currentsite.com (it’s NOT a WordPress site). The webhost says that in order to transfer the NEW WordPress website (that I’m currently designing) to the existing domain, I need to export all the files using sftp and then export the databases using their myphp export feature on their dashboard. I’m then told I need to import both. The Webhost’s process is quite a complex one and I’m looking for a simpler, more streamlined solution. I’m assuming that if I follow their advice, I’m also going to need to go through all the internal links on the transferred site and change them to point to the new domain?

Would your plugin help with any of this? In other words will it ‘save’ all the pages, save all the databases AND allow me to search and replace the old domain name with the new one before I export (using the ‘search and replace’ feature?) Is it then just a case of installing your plugin on the ’empty’ WordPress site on the new domain and then import the exported file? I read something somewhere about ‘serialisation’ that suggests you can’t simply search and replace urls? – have I misunderstood that part?

Are there any other issues that I need to be aware of?

I notice there’s an export function within WordPress where I can export ‘everything’. Does your Plugin do more than the built in WordPress export/import function?

    Thanks for your help. Steve

Hi Steve. The plugin will take care of everything for you.

Here is a step by step guide of what you need to do:
    1. Install WordPress on currentsite.com
    2. Install and activate All-in-One WP Migration plugin
    3. Go to All-in-One WP Migration -> Import page and note the upload limit
    4. Go to the temporary domain of your site and if you haven’t install and activate All-in-One WP Migration plugin
    5. Navigate to All-in-One WP Migration -> Export page and select export to file.
    6. Wait for the process to finish and then download the file at the end.
    7. Check the filesize of the exported file. If the file size is larger than the limit on step 3, read this guide to increase the limit.
    8. Go to currentsite.com -> All-in-One WP Migration -> Import. Select import from File and select the file from step 6. Follow the process.

This is everything. You don’t need to replace any urls. The plugin will collect all the resources – posts, media, pages, users, transfer them over and assign the new domain name.

    Hi Yani

Thanks for your quick reply! Wow! This is fantastic news. I love the simplicity of what you’ve created. Out of interest, what is the filesize limit? And finally, why would your plugin be more effective than the native WordPress export/import function?

    Big thanks, Steve

The filesize limited is hosting dependent. Every web hosting sets a different limit. The guide that I shared above describes different ways to set it up.

The native WordPress export/import tool is powerful and it can certainly help you move data between sites. The main tradeoff is that it does not include your plugin and themes. If you make any changes to your theme or plugin files, you will not be able to transfer these changes. I haven’t used the export/import tool recently but in the past versions it only transfers posts and pages. It will not include custom post types and media files. The tool will not do any find/replace for the new domain – you will need to use a different solution after importing your data.
