Very new to WordPress and VERY new to Nextgen Gallery.

I downloaded the gallery yesterday, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to use it. I can create a gallery, upload images, and see it. So that’s working. Questions are:

    1. Can someone explain albums? I created an album. It appears to have my two galleries in it. But what do I DO with it? On my site, the user drills down from the home page to child, grand child, and so on until they get to the page where the galleries are. On my Home Page, I may have an image for images of “Nature”. User clicks image and goes to a page with “Wildlife”, “Birds”, “Butterflies”, etc images. User clicks one (say Birds), and jumps to a page with “Water Birds”, “Song Birds”, “Raptors”, etc, each with an image the user clicks to open the thumbnails of a gallery.
Where does the album fit in? Can I have a gallery for each of “Water Birds”, “Song Birds” and “Raptors”, put them in an album, and use the album on the page to show all 3 galleries? Is there something in the help that’ll explain how best to use an album?

    2. Filenames… The purpose of my site is for users to view images and contact me to order prints/downloads/products. To do this, they user must have a filename. I’d like to have the filename display on thumbnails when the mouse hovers, but I really need the filename to diplay on the detail image in an easy-to-see location. Above the top of the image isn’t. How do I move the title to PREFERABLY overlay the bottom, center of the detail image, set the size, font, and color for the filename? Is there a simple way to configure the gallery to place the filename where I’d like it?

    3. Navigation. I’d like the user to be able to easily move from detail image to detail image. PREFERABLY using the arrow keys on the keyboard. But, if I can’t have arrow keys, can the “prev” and “next” be made more obvious? Below the bottom of the image is a poor place. Is there a simple way to configure the gallery to move these?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I accidentally appear to have answered question 2. At the MOMENT, I appear to get the image title/filename on the thumbnails if I leave the mouse on there for a while. I don’t know if this is a built-in, deliberate delay, or if it’s just really slow to get the title, but as long as I leave the mouse on the thumbnail for approximately a second, the image’s filename does appear.

Is this delay deliberate, or is something just really slow? I presume it’s not a performance issue since I’m doing this on a local PC so there’s no slow performance as they may be when using the web.

NOW I just have to figure out what I changed that’s causing detail images NOT TO DISPLAY… I’m using the basic thumbnail, but when I click on the thumbnail, it doesn’t display the detail the way it did this morning… which means I’ve done something, I just don’t know what yet….. — Jeez, I hate knowing just enough to get into trouble but not enough to know how to get back out!

Well, if it takes long enough to get a response, I may stumble onto answers to most of my questions…..

I’m displaying detail images again. Unfortunately, after resizing the images a couple times I wound up with detail displays of different sizes for different images. Gallery manager shows the same dimensions, but the screen display wasn’t consistent. I wound up deleting all the images and re-uploading everything so I could do ONE resize and not have the gallery get inconsistent.

Here’s where I am on the title display. The imagebrowser doesn’t seem a good choice for my site. So, in the Gallery Settings I turned OFF “Use Imagebrowser Effect”. I THINK this means I’m using the Lightbox for detail images. It’s not too bad – at least the navigation is reasonably visible, although the “back to the thumbnails” button could be larger and more obvious. BUT, there’s still NO title. I rummaged around and found a place that said the DESCRIPTION gets displayed, so I put a value in a description, and indeed, it did get displayed.
Unfortunately, I need something that’s AUTOMATICALLY populated – so either filename or title… And whatever get displayed needs to be a lot bigger and more visible…
Can someone point me to the right php module and perhaps spot to change from description to something more useful? And the place in whichever CSS has the formatting for the field so I can change the size, font, color, and so on?

Found another discussion that SAID changing line 42 in gallery.php from description to filename or alttext would change the information displayed on the detail image. Tried it. Nothing happened.

HOW do I make sure a change to a file in the plugin gets into the wordpress pages or wherever it has to be so the changes actually show up?
I’ve tried deactivating and activating the plugin. Doesn’t seem to do anything. I did a search for “description” and would up changing at least 20 different php files and trying them. Nothing happened.

@graciea – We cover all of the basics in our help documentation which can be found here: https://nextgen-gallery.com/help/

Well done sorting out the issues you have so far!! If you are still having more issues after checking through our documentation we would be happy to help you sort out those finer details.

It would seem a lot of the questions you have also center around a potential need for a custom template … you can find specific information about templates here: https://nextgen-gallery.com/templates/

    Thanks!
