• Hey all

Me and a couple of friends have started doing some escape games lately.
In this games you are locked up in a room (usually in groups of up to 6 people), and have 60 minutes time to escape by solving several puzzles.

As the most tech-savvy person in the group, I took it upon myself to create a community website where we can list the rooms we’ve done, write reviews/blogs, implement a rating system per room, have a community forum, …

Searching for a possible way to achieve this, I quickly was being lead to CMS solutions.
The 3 that seemed the best suitable for this were either WordPress, Joomla or Drupal.
I started off with Drupal, but on their forums I was told that Drupal would require a lot more configuration to achieve the same as what would be done rather quickly in WordPress.

    So, off to WordPress then!
I managed to intall WordPress and Buddypress which should be the main 2 components to achieve what I mentioned earlier.

So, now I’m pretty much stuck…
I know I need to research how to USE WordPress for starters, but of course it doesn’t end with that.

Any advice on plugins which could help me in achieving my goal would be highly
appreciated, as well as links to web pages with similar functionalities (could be communities for music/movie/video game enthusiasts for example).

  • You have given a vague idea of what you are trying to do, but it will help you to first organize your concept. Make a list of what goes on the menu, what your user can see and do on the site, and then see what parts are accomplished with built-in features and what parts need plugins. You’ve already got the Buddypress part for the forum, but focus on what differentiates the other pieces from basic posts and pages to see what you need.
So you know: posts are associated by time and category whereas pages are mostly independent and informative. Menus usually consist of pages and categories.
There are numerous plugins to do ratings, but look to see if you want to make a custom post type first so you know if the rating plugin will handle posts only or custom post type.

Did you consider attending WordCamp or another in-person event? You can learn so much in a few days, it’s worth the money and definitely worth the time.
