• Hey all

I am completely new to web design.. looking to start my own business, want to advertise online and eventually take bookings, possibly payments and maybe sell stock.

any ideas of what i should be doing? got domain name, got hosting, need to get on with site but no idea about themes and all that goes with it. what should i be looking for in a theme?

can I for example choose 1 and change the colours on it to match company colours? Are logos on theme sites there to stay, and can u change layouts?
as u can tell, complete novice and v confused but determined.

    Any help much appreciated!! :0)

  • If I were you, I’d install WP, choose a theme that’s roughly like the ideas you have for the site, install any plugins you’ll need (as a starter this usually means a contact form plugin, an SEO plugin, an anti-spam plugin like Akismet that comes as standard, and a sitemap plugin: but you sound as though you’ll want an eCommerce plugin as well) and then set up the structure of your site as you want it – posts, pages, categories, menus etc.

When you’ve got all that sorted out, I’d only then start looking in detail at the colours and stuff. It’s usually a much better bet to get the functionality sorted first. The look-and-feel is a relatively minor issue. There’s nothing worse than a site that looks great but is practically unusable. Whereas a site that works, even if it doesn’t look too brilliant, has at least some value.

If you need help or recommendations for any of this (installation of WP, installing a theme to get you started if you don’t want to start with one of the default themes, installing plugins, etc), you can create a post, probably in the How-to and Troubleshooting forum, and we’ll try to help.

As for choosing a theme, you can start here. Or you can just settle for one of the default themes until you’re more sure of what you will require.
