Hi everyone, I am about to make a site, should i use the basic theme, say twenty fourteen and then map my new template onto it, or do i need to code it from the bottom up?

I will be using my psd’s to implent a brand new template.

You can piggy back off of any theme that has the general support for what you need. I personally prefer to find something close to what I’m doing, then create a “child theme” off of it.

Worth noting you should definitely create a child theme so that when your template updates you don’t lose all your changes.

could you just not update the theme?

If you edit the theme directly, when the publisher comes out with a new version & you update it, it will overwrite your changes.
