I have a new subscriber. However, when I go to my Paid Membershi Pro dashbard, this user did not register. There is no record of it? How did this user create a subscriber account? Was I hacked?

    My website is https://inkspired.xyz/.

I do not use any subsription method but Paid Membershi Pro so I am baffled how this user did this.

    Hello @matthew06,

Can you tell me how you know a user has subscribed?
Was a user created but no Level assigned?
Any additional information you can provide would be helpful.

All I can think of is, when using Paid Memberships Pro (PMPro) you do not need to have registration enabled in your general settings. This is only for WordPress registration.

On the left panel of WordPress, I click on USERS > ALL USERS. It is here that I see there is a new member. I did not create this member. This member has a subscriber role. Now, if I go to PMPRO, this member is not listed there. I am wondering how this member subscribed at all if he/she/they did not go through PMPRO.

A user account will be created for each user before they even complete the checkout process.

Please navigate to Memberships > Orders – there will likely be a ‘token’ order there, where that user started the checkout process (which creates a user account) but never completes it and makes payment.

Thank you. But this subscriber is not in that list either. Maybe it is a WordPress subscriber?

If there isn’t even an order for them then they might have registered elsewhere on your site – would that be possible?

If you navigate to Settings > General, is the ‘allow users to register’ checkbox checked?

No, the box for ANYONE CAN REGISTER has no checkmark. I do not have email subscription forms either. I also do not have any products but I do have WooCommerce installed.

From a PMPro perspective, a user cannot be created unless they process through checkout > an order gets created > a user gets created. There’s no other way a user would have been created through PMPro’s workflow.

The only other possible alternative I can think of is that your Woo settings are open for registration.

There is no WooCommerce order from this user, too. I am guessing this subscriber “followed” via WordPress.Com. If I turn off “anyone can register,” will it affect the membership settings in PMPRO?

Turning off the ‘Anyone can Register’ setting won’t affect PMPro and is safe to do so.
