So I decided to switch my host. I backed up everything from my previous host (Powweb) onto my HD and am in the process of putting some stuff back up on my new host (Justhost) and I’m starting with my blog. The previous host has now expired and is no longer existing.

I uploaded my old wordpress blog files into my new server (with new /appropriate wp-config installed) and it’s all up there except my posts.

I’ve gathered that I SHOULD have exported my posts into some file that I would be able to import them back into my new server but I have not done this and my old server is gone. I have backed up my entire blog directory folder which I figured that information would have been kept in.

Tell me I haven’t lost all my posts forever…

  • The posts, and a lot of other WordPress settings, are stored in a database. The database is NOT stored in the folders you backed up.

I don’t have access to my old one anymore.
    I effed up?

When conducting a backup, you need to backup both the files/directories as well as the MySQL Database which all settings, posts, pages and information about your install are stored.

If you didn’t backup the MySQL Database, you can try to contact your old host and see if they have a backup they can provide you with, otherwise it will, unfortunately, have to be a lesson learned [the hard way].

I realized, I myself, subscribed (RSS) to my own site, to see how it results etc. and it’s still there, all of my entries, you can’t click it obviously bc the link is dead– maybe it hasn’t been deleted yet by powweb or whatever. But I was able to retrieve it there.

So in case anyone else has the same mental lapse– one could check their reader.
