• Did anybody notice the new search here in the forum?
It’s totally different, and instead of the usual 5-6 results I just got 892 for the keyword I’ve searched for!

There are many better scripts out there, eg Phorum, PunBB to name a few.

bbPress is here, and it’s staying. The matter just is not up for discussion.

    why not phpBB?

Because bbPress is being developed by the WordPress developers as a future companion forum to WordPress.

And, as Podz said, “bbPress is here, and it’s staying. The matter just is not up for discussion.”

Well, phpbb is much better than this crummy shit… much.

You can always setup a phpbb support forum for WP and advertise it here if you want.

idbehold: it’s been hashed and re-hashed, but there’s nothing stopping you from re-re-hashing the issue.

In what specific ways is phpBB better than bbPress? What features does phpBB have — that bbPress lacks — that make providing free support easier, both for adminsitrators and users?

Try thinking before speaking. Specifically, try choosing lighter words. Of course, if you consider “crummy shit” to be light words, then let me say that constructive criticism is much better than your crummy shit.

While idbehold’s statement is silly and childish, the point is that bbpress is not as full-featured as phpBB. Skippy, there are many many features of phpBB which would enable greater ease of use for everyone.

It’s useless, however, to complain (and to do so in a silly and childish manner) about the choice of boardware. This one works reasonably well, if without the bells and whistles other boardware brings to the table.

I fail to see the necessity of arguing over it, especially in a thread about the search function, which is definitely a great improvement over the previous entries.

vkaryl: I’m familiar with phpBB — both as a user and an administrator. Which specific features of phpBB would be immediately beneficial to the majority of users here?

bbPress is under active development. If there is a feature that would benefit users, let’s hear it!

Listing the first poster in a thread instead of or in addition to the last one (I don’t want to know who posted last – I want to know who asked the question to begin with!); ability to change one’s email address in profile, among other things; allowing for pre-modding if needed (seems that would have been nice various times lately); allowing for pm’ing, which would be of some benefit for many I think…. various other things I think of at odd times but haven’t stated and can’t come up with offhand….

And this boardware may eventually do those. I just personally never think it’s a good idea to reinvent the wheel…. which is what’s happening here it seems.

    Reinventing the wheel ?
Blogger was first .. then Greymatter …

    Evolution ??

Yes in comparison it does lack features you listed, but it’s also damn fast, doesn’t waste space with sigs, no avatars, no ‘rankings by posts’ and all the other bandwidth wasting stuff.

I never knew you couldn’t change the email address on your profile. Sounds like an oversight. A bug report might be in order.

I’ve never understood the purpose of PMs: presumably most of us have blogs here; so why should WP support provide a private contact mechanism, when that’s something you can do with your blog? That’s a matter of personal preference, presumably — if it’s a feature on which you rely elsewhere I can accept that not having it here might be seen as a lack of features.

All of the “bandwidth wasting stuff” is optional. That’s hardly the point. And I don’t find this board any faster (on dial up) than the various phpBB boards I run, visit, and use.

Regardless, my point was simply that phpBB is more fully featured. As it happens, I love sigs and avatars, and I don’t see where the problem with them lies. I don’t personally use pms at all – but millions of other people do. I think that people don’t use others’ blogs as “contact points” as much here as perhaps y’all would like to think….

No reason for an argument at all really. This boardware works fine for its stated purpose…. but I too far prefer phpBB, and even once bbpress is released should that ever occur, I won’t personally switch my fora to it.
