New Posts not showing up on front page (but are in categories)

I’m new to WordPress, had a friend install it and everything is fine except my new posts don’t show up on the front page. They’re posted in the categories but the only way to get them on the front page is to “sticky” them. Sticky posts do show up on the front page, but under them, the most recent post is the last one from my old blog that I imported. Nothing that I’ve written IN WP is there.
I’m using the free Woo Theme “Premium News” and the Disqus plug-in (when I deactivate it, the problem still exists). The friend who installed WP says she thinks it’s in the .php.
