• Since splogs get their content from other blogs and simply repost it, I have developed (and just released) Digital Fingerprint, a plugin for WordPress that aims to help blog owners locate instances of unauthorized content use.

Basically, you create your own personal search phrase that is unique to your site alone (think googlewhack) and then insert this phrase into your RSS feed on a post by post basis. If you ever find this phrase outside of your own site, you know you have been ripped off by a content scraper. The plugin utilizes several methods to help you find your digital fingerprint.

Suggestions and resources on what to do after finding out your content has been misappropriated are also included in the management portion of the plugin.

You can download Digital Fingerprint (beta) at MaxPower. I hope it will really be useful for blog owners.

  • Love the idea, especially since I publish original fiction on my site. But it doesn’t appear to be working. I uploaded the entire ‘digitalfingerprint’ folder to my ‘plugins’ and activated as per installation instructions. Do not find an entry under “Manager” or any other setting. No key appears when writing new post. I am using WordPress 2.0.4 with a customized “Plaintxt” theme.

    emhouston,

I always do this check before putting a new version of a plugin on the net. My host uses fantastico so I quickly set up a fresh version of wordpress. I download the plugin from my site, and follow my own instructions to the letter to see if there is something I missed. Everything worked fine on a steaming fresh install of wordpress (ewww).

Did you activate the plugin? If you did and its still not showing up then there is something very specific about your install that is causing the menu’s not to show up. I’d be happy to work with you to get it going, give me a shout if you like.

Has there been a fix for this plugin yet? Last I checked it conflicted with AdSense-Deluxe.

Also, is there a digital fingerprint plugin for photos?
