New Permalink Structure gives 404 everywhere

  • I recently modified the permalink URL structure, but in doing so, it made every link on my blog and wp-admin to lead to a 404. Unfortunately, I’m at work and don’t have FTP access to the server. Any advice on what to do when I get home?

  • That happenes to me sometimes. usually I click “Update permalink structure” and if that still doesn’t do it. I find a way to remove the .htaccess file, and replace it, edit it manually, and click update several times, until it works. It’s really a pain, I had to do that today, and all I did was add a static page, and then, changed my mind. FUN.

    Thanks a lot. I managed to download an FTP extension for firefox, and used that. Glad to see it working again.

    This can really freak you out as your entire site dies — I deleted .htaccess and quickly changed back to the default permalink structure.

    Huzzah! I’ve spent a while, browsing through this forum and so many people are suffering this problem but I am pleased to say that to resolve the 404 problem when clicking perma links such as previous posts, it can easily be resolved by selecting the default permalink structure and deleting htaccess now I don’t even know what htaccess is or does, as am a complete newb to WP, but this frustrating problem has been resolved by these actions, look no further fellow sufferers of the 404 problem, silfani has hit the nail on the head!!!
