Every time I create a page, it creates a new entry in the top menu with the title of the page I just created.

Checking the forum entries, it appeared the “Custom Links” feature would allow me to fix that. However, the “Custom Links” does not appear to do anything.

When I go to Menu->Custom Links it prompts for URL and text. I enter # in the url and for the text something like “Misc.” for a top level menu entry. I then save the link.

Nothing happens. When I go back to “Custom Links” there is nothing there even though I saved the link.

I am trying to use the “Custom Links” to set up a parent link like “Misc” that would have child links under it.

It could be a theme or plugin conflict. Try:
    – deactivating ALL (yes all) plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem (plugin functions can interfere). If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – switching to the unedited default Theme (Twenty Seventeen, etc.) for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
    – If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

What’s happening is that your primary navigation menu is set to automatically add pages to it, so that’s why its’ doing this.

In the admin area under ‘Appearance -> Menus’, check that you have a menu set up, and it’s set to the main menus location (that’s down at the bottom of the page when you edit a menu). Then you can edit the items on that menu and they will shwo up as jsut as they are in that menu.

Okay, I have disabled all plugins. I have deleted the social menu leaving only the “Top Menu”. The “Top Menu” has “Home” and my three “Custom Link” entries on it, “Thing One”, “Thing 2”, and “Thing 3”, which is all I want.

I have created four pages, “Page 1”, “Page 2”, “Page 3”, and “Page 4”.

The checkbox for “Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu” is not checked.

    So far, so good?

However, on each page, when I try to set the “Parent” parameter, the choices are only “Home”, and the names of the other three pages. There is no choice for “Thing 1”, etc.

    What did I miss?

When you’re editing pages and setting parents, only other pages can be parents, so any custom menu entries are not included in that list.

When you’re editing menus, the page hierarchy doesn’t matter. You add each menu item manually, and position it where you want it to be.

    Thank you very much!
