I have a new WP multisite install on Cloudways. I currently have 1 subdomain for a client site, uploaded from a subdomain of my local pc multisite install. Everything now works but the subdomain is not yet ‘live’ (still parked).

The Primary Domain on Cloudways uses a url that I intended to be my own live site but does not yet have any content uploaded and defaults to a page from Twenty Sixteen theme.

I am now thinking that it may not be a good idea for the Primary domain to be anything other than a reference to a ‘parked’ url and I should make my own site a subdomain. If I do that I want to use the url that is currently acting on the primary domain as my subdomain url.

    My questions:
If I register another url for the primary domain and just leave it parked at a registrar will that work OK?
If so I then plan to change the primary domain url and all references to it in the primary and subdomain database tables following these instructions Will this work? Is there anything else I would need to consider?

Sorry, these are the instructions I propose to follow:

    wpengine.com/support/how-to-change-a-multi-site-primary-domain

I am not sure if changing just the database entries will be sufficient, will I need to make any other changes in Network Admin or should making the DB changes allow me to log straight back into the primary domain after these changes without problem? No site IDs will change on the cloud based install.

Well it all worked – eventually!
