• I haven’t updated my site in a few months, but yesterday I went through and updated WordPress, the theme and all plugins. Since, I haven’t been able to upload new images. I don’t know if this is due to the updates or not, since I didn’t try uploading anything before updating.

I have deactivated all plugins, switched themes, and verified permissions. I have also deleted a bunch of unused images and plugins, so I know there is space.

When I try to upload a new image I don’t get any error, I just get a grey box. This happens with images of all sizes, even small ones (100px x 100px).

The previously uploaded images show up fine still.

I’m at a loss for what to do next…
I’m a basic WordPress user – I’ve picked up quite a few skills over the past 10-15 years, but I am by NO MEANS a coder.

Any helps is really appreciated! I searched the forum already, but didn’t find anything that helped so far.

  • Please update your PHP version (or ask your hoster how to do). Minimum v5.6, highly recommended 7.X, latest is 7.2. Can’t say if this is solving it, but you are on v5.4, which is deprecated.

Thank you Presskopp. I thought I did that this morning, but I guess I didn’t save. However, I have updated the PHP now, and the images are still grey boxes ??

I’ll keep trying over the next 24 hours or so, in case it takes a while to register. WordPress immediate upgraded the max upload size though, so I’m pretty sure it was instant.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I will try anything within my capacity!

You are on 7.1 now! Next step would be to disable all 3rd party plugins, switch to a standard theme and see if you can upload normally then. Can you do that?

I did do that before posting, but I just tried again after updating the PHP properly. Still not working ??

Would have been too easy, bad luck. Can you check your server log files for errors? Also setting debug mode could help getting information about what is wrong, see

    Let’s try that..

Yikes, that might be beyond my limited skills, but let me see if I can figure it out. Thanks for your suggestions – I truly appreciate your time!

Just as a follow up, the difficulty went beyond my ability to troubleshoot, so I went over to Fiverr and got some help. If anyone is every looking, I would recommend the provider “Bootmaster” He was quite quick, effective and relatively well priced!

Apparently, “There was 2 problems one is jquery and other is folder”. I won’t pretend to understand that, but the issue is now resolved, so I’m a happy blogger!

Thanks for your time and help Presskopp!

I won’t pretend to understand that either, if you could ask for a more detailed review would be nice, so we all would know what to look at next time this occures to anybody. I can only guess jquery was called more than once maybe (?) “folder” could be wrong file permissions, but who knows? Ah the one who solved it ??

Unfortunately English was not his first language, and I also don’t think I am fluent enough in technical language to know what to ask properly. If I have a chance to get a better answer, I will certainly update this post!

    Thanks!
