New Install – Plugin Installer Not Working

What kind of permission you have on “wp-content/plugins” folder?

If you’re getting the error when you click on that link, then it’s probably a permissions/ownership issue with wp-admin. When you say it was installed “via my host”, does that mean they actually installed it or did you install it with some auto-installer? If your host installed it, then contact them…I would guess it would be a directory/file ownership issue.

Ok, two more questions:

1. am I understand right you trying click on Plugin Browser/Installer in admin WP interface?

2. Which plugin (Name / Plugin of-site) you try to install?

Figaro: It was done via an auto-installer using cPanel when I set up the url and web space.

Bartman91: I get the error message when I click on the link. I have uploaded some manually with no problem, but I’d like to be able to do this automatically.

Since you have Cpanel, you may want to try a manual install and see if you have better luck…it’s pretty easy with Cpanel. See the following for step-by-step directions.

If I do a manual install and copied the wordpress files to my root as per the video, would it overwrite the plugins and blogs already there?

“blogs”? How many blogs do you have?

Just save what you have (your themes mainly) and do a fresh install, then upload the themes. You can save the plugins as well, but if they are form the WP plugins directory, you can download them again form within WP once it’s installed.

I have some blog posts, only a few and some pages, thats all.

Do I understand correctly – copy any plugins I have and the theme folder I am using to my hard drive.

What is the name of the file or folder that has the posts in it? Or are they held within the database and therefore would not be affected by copying a new set of files over.

I have unzipped a new version of WP2.7.1 to a folder /wordpress Can I simply copy all the files over and then upload the theme and plugins?

I’ve been using Joomla for quite a while and I’m trying to get to grips with WP, so many, many thanks for your help.

Yes, your posts and pages are in the database. What you need to save from your old files is essentially everything in the wp-content directory and the wp-config.php file.

Put your custom themes, plugins, and uploads directory (if you have an uploads directory) from your previous install (all in the wp-contents directory) in the same location in your new install. Then since your other install is new version of WP, just move your wp-config.php file to the new install. As long as the new install is in the exact same location, with the same name, as your old install, you should now be able to login.

Well, I thought I’d first try and ftp all the folders and files and overwrite the existing.

It didn’t work. The whole site is up and looks fine, but it still shows the error message if I click the plugin browser/install link.

What I did notice on the video was that it was 2.7 and in the admin section under Tools, there was an option for Upgrading.

I only have Import & Export as options! I don’t believe this is right…is it?

I can update plug-ins that are already installed, but as far as using the Plugin Browser/Installer or the ‘install’ links on the new plug-ins I get the ‘You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.’ message.

I’ve already tried the permissions to 777 and opened EVERYTHING up all the way (I know, dangerous) just to see if it would work, but it didn’t and then closed everything back down to the more secure 644 and 755. So file permissions Obviously don’t seems to be the problem.

I’ve manually deleted all the files on the host and uploaded a fresh install, and still no go.

I’ve even used the database cleanup script somebody suggested in another thread and that didn’t help either.

Has anybody found a solution to this yet? There are a lot of threads on this topic, but I still haven’t found one with a solution.

I suppose I should mention that I got it fixed. It was actually the Host. It was an FTP issue they had to fix on their end.
