Installing WordPress and hosting

So I am not familiar with wordpress install, I take that it is zippered, and I was wondering if its free, or do you have to buy hosting and a domain name here? I’m on the other wordpress.com site and there you just load a theme and start producing and your site is up in like 10 minutes and they give you a free option. I cannot get around these zip files and I’m clueless on how to load them, thanks for reading. good day.
