New format Plugin page lacks “Update” indicator

I noticed on the WordPress dashboard the number “1” in a circle next to “Plugins” on the sidebar links. In the past, this would have meant that one of my plugins had an update ready, and when I visited the Plugins page, I would see a message by the relevant plugin telling me that I should download the update.

This time, though, when I visited the plugins page, I see no indication which of the plugins is asking to be updated. This strikes me as a design error in the new version of WordPress. Surely some programmer forgot to write the function to flag plugins with updates.

Is there something I’m missing here?
