I have previously set up default meta descriptions in search appearance. I want to update them now with better patterns using excerpt and title snippet variables, but the new variables are not populating.

Under wp-admin/admin.php?page=wpseo_titles#top#post-types I set my new default meta description using the snippet variables.

    e.g. title separator excerpt

I go to the post page
I click on the meta description box
Looks perfect – The title separator and excerpt have converted e.g.
This is a post | The Excerpt

    Update/Save

    Clear caches
    View page source

    Old description is still there

If I add anything to the end of “title separator excerpt” in the post it saves but I can’t do it for all 2000 posts.

How do I ensure that all post descriptions are overwritten with my new variables?

    Thanks for the help

  • Hi @drivesa,

If you see the correct default variables in the meta description field for a post this should appear in the meta description tag. However, if you set a custom meta description in the post, this will override the default setting under SEO > Search Appearance > Content Types for Posts.

To help us troubleshoot the issue, we have the following questions:

    1. When you edit the post and click “?dit Snippet”, what appears in the meta description field? Is this the text or do you see the variables you set as the default?

    3. If you delete everything in the meta description field and then save the post, what appears in the meta description when you view the page source?
