• Hi I’m working on my own website. Its still in the word press file and not yet available for public viewing.

Yesterday I did a lot of work on it and wrote a lot of content in 4 or 5 different pages and also uploaded some pictures.

Today when I go to the site everything that I did yesterday is gone without a trace! All the new content is gone from the pages. And the new pictures are gone from the library and also the pages.

Some of the pages had content already and this is still there only what I did yesterday is gone completely. I know that everything was saved but stupidly I forgot to make a backup.

I have contacted my provider Robohost and they have told me that there is nothing wrong with the server and that my content cannot be found there.

I have tried changing the theme but the content has not returned.

I didn’t install any new plug-ins or make any changes apart from the content.

How could it just disappear and is there any way to get this new content back?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Thanks Dave

“Its still in the word press file” can you clarify what this means?

did your hosting provider check in the database that is connected to your website to see if anything is in there?

page and post content is stored in a database.
files for WordPress, images, plugins and themes are stored in file manager area.

    1. Check your hosting via FTP. Are the files you upload in wp-contents/uploads/whatever?

    2. Access your database via phpmyadmin (through the hosting control panel). Are the posts/pages in the wp-posts table?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your reply. With “word press file” I mean that the domain name has /wp on the end so the public cant see it till your ready to make it accessible. Sorry I’m a real beginner and I’m probably not using the right term for this. For example I’m still using https://www.yourdomainname.com/wp instead of https://www.yourdomainname.com

I explained this to my provider and they looked for some of the images I had uploaded and couldn’t find any.

Hi Steve thanks for your reply. I checked what you suggested and they are not there at all.

WordPress does not delete itself. You’ll need to work with your host on this. Do you have a backup of the site?

Yes I made a backup 2 days before with the plugin UpdraftPlus.

Thanks this would be helpful but I already have the content from the last backup still in the site and a little bit after that so I would lose a bit of content if I would restore it.

I just forgot to do a backup of the whole day I worked on the site 2 days after I did the last backup and that’s the only information that I’m missing. The rest is still there.

Lesson learned always backup every bit of info that’s important.

Its just not very reassuring that it can all disappear for no apparent reason.

    Content doesn’t just disappear.

    There are a few possibilities:

    1. MySQL crashed and your host did a restore from before your work was done.
    2. You deleted stuff.
    3. Your site has been hacked.

I did ask the provider if there were any reasons that this from their side could of happened before I started this thread. They couldn’t give me any and couldn’t find any of my new content.

I know I didn’t delete it all because I worked on 4 or 5 pages in one day and read them all at the end. I could have maybe deleted 1 by accident after this but but not all 5. Also I would have had to separately delete the images out of the media library.

How can I test if it has been hacked?

Install the WordFence plugin and scan your site.

Thanks for the tip but it couldn’t find anything.
