The niche is good and has a lot of potential! Pet owners advice is always in demand in one form or another. As for design-wise, I think it could use some work.

The content on the page looks a little crammed. Maybe adjusting where certain information is placed and how much is placed on one page might help out guiding the eyes when it scans it. That is what you want to focus on is guiding the reader’s eyes first toward the most important parts of your page, and then afterwards to the less important parts.
Work on a more noticable and more clean side navigation scheme. Although you don’t have a lot of content now, you don’t want the navigation to blend in too much with all the miscelaneous side content.
Also, the background gradient, although nice, tiles vertically. What you might want to do is make the background image tile on top horizontally, and then make the background color under the gradient image the same color as the bottom of the gradient.
Other than those things, I think you’re on the right track. Keep it watered and sun fed and you’ll get far! ??
