• So I want to build my own website but I have no idea how to get started. I have a friend who was teaching me the inner-workings (ex: edit a page or post etc.) but I dont know how to build my “base” for my site. she would type in her web address then /wp-admin/
(ex: https://wmydomainname.com/wp-admin/) then log in and be able to edit her site form anywhere there was internet. How do I do this?

any help would be great, thank you!

  • First off you need to have webspace (Free or paid) and then have wordpress uploaded. Do you have either or both of these? ??

Nope where do I get webspace? and how do I upload wordpress to it?

Alright, I’d search google for free webspace WordPress support and just choose one with a lot of space! ??

Then we will get into the uploading WordPress.

You might want to think twice about trying to using free web space to run WordPress. It’s usually nothing but trouble. I would strongly recommend that you look for some decent, paid, hosting. This is really a case of “You’ll get what you paid for”.

    Esmi,

This all depends on what the site is for. If it’s personal, free webspace works fine. I have had MANY MANY personal websites run on free webspace and only just recently bought one paid. There isn’t anything wrong with freehosting, they’ve gotten a LOT better since the old days. Let the user choose, which she wants.

    Slipgear89,
I figured since you are new it maybe easier to try a free webhost first so you aren’t wasting your money if something goes wrong. However it is up to you but the horror stories about free webhosting aren’t true at all. All but one of my personal sites are on free webhosting and they are fine.

All WordPress sites? My comments were based on the kinds of issues that turn up in these forums. The general consensus amongst forum regulars and experienced users is avoid free hosting.

If people want to try WordPress for free, it would be far better to direct them towards a free wordpress.com site.

    All WordPress sites?

Three of them are and they run perfectly fine. I’m just trying to help a person learn how to use WordPress, who may not want a WordPress.com account and won’t want to spend an arm and a leg. I’m for helping people not trying to get my advertising quota in for the day.

I beg your pardon! What advertising quota?

Megan, after we get the free web space what do I do next?

See Installing_WordPress. But please do think carefully about using free hosting. You can sign up for a free wordpress.com site without any of the hassle of obtaining hosting, creating databases or installing WordPress. And, for the record, I am not employed by, affiliated or linked to wordpress.com in any way, shape or form – despite some rather unpleasant and unnecessary comments to the contrary. My suggestions are based upon 3.5 years helping out on these forums.

Thanks for a quick response. I used to have a wordpress.com blog but it got to the point of being to limiting. I also used to use a drag and drop program to create a lot of websites however, both wordpress.com and the drag and drop program I was using were beginning to bore me. I want to expand beyond that basic stuff and teach myself, with others help of course, a little more about websites. “free webspace is new to me I normally pay (I use a site called FatCow.com have for quite some time now) just wanted to try. It doesn’t look like the free webspace I signed up for supports php which makes it impossible to use wordpress on that site then correct?

I can virtually guarantee that you’ll run into problems pretty quickly with free hosting – which can be pretty damn confusing (as well as frustrating) if you’re trying to learn how to wrangle a self-hosted install. Do you still have some space at FatCow?

Another “free” option if you want to play around a little is to install WordPress locally. It really isn’t as daunting as it sounds.

Whats weird is I downloaded EASYPHP and the Module for WordPress when I login at www.remarpro.com i’m fine, when I try to login using the module it doesnt recognize my password or username.

    Any thoughts?

(updated) nevermind realized it was admin etc. Let’s see how far I get from here.

Ok, I’m in. I got it. Now I was trying to import a template I found online when i try to do so it asks for a WXR file but when i go to the file folder I downloaded there is no WXR file just the index.php’s and so forth. Should i be looking for something else?

Now I was trying to import a template I found online

A theme – not a template, yes? If so, it should all be packed into a folder with the theme’s name. Just drop that folder into wp-content/themes and it will magically appear in Appearance->Themes for you to try out.

The Tools->Export/Import options are used to export/import actual post content (text, images etc) from one install to another.
