New AMP image size requirements

The widest images on my site are 722px.

Now Google has issues new requirements for AMP images. Among other things, images should now be 1200 pixels wide.

Does this mean I have to update all posts on my site with larger images? If so, who is to say next year’s guidelines will call for images of, say, 2400 px wide?

What happens if I do not include 1200 wide images? Will AMP pages still be available?
