I installed a clean, new website with wordpress 3.7, no plugins, default theme. However, the visual editor displays no controls – no buttons. If I hover my mouse where the buttons should be, I get an outline of a button. The buttons apparently work, because I clicked on some of the outlines and got lists, etc. But without the button images, the visual editor is definitely not visual.

I’ve included a link to the site, but it won’t be of any help. The problem is with the post/page editor and there’s absolutely nothing on the site except default data.

Apparently the link didn’t get displayed, but as I said – it isn’t relevant. The problem is with the visual editor.

Another bit of information that might help. I have another site, dd764.org, which I updated to 3.7 and it seems to be OK. All three of the WordPress “default” themes, Twenty Eleven, Twenty Twelve and Twenty Thirteen need to be updated in the dd764 site, which I haven’t done yet, and which I am not going to do until the 3.7 mess is straightened out. I’m afraid my problem might be in the Twenty Thirteen Theme, rather than in the core.

I have not seen this particular problem posted by anyone else. What browser are you using? Have you tried another one?

I hadn’t tried another browser except Firefox, but upon your suggestion I tried IE11 and Chrome, both with the same results as Firefox.

Hmm, that seems pretty strange. Can you post a screenshot of the visual editor?

Sorry, I don’t know how to post a screenshot. How do you do that?

I’m thinking that this problem is related to other problems I’ve seen in the forums relating to images. I had installed this site previously and then immediately installed a gallery plugin. The gallery plugin didn’t work – it didn’t display any images, not in the media library or in the editor or in a post in the front end. I looked around at the problems posted and decided that the best thing to do would be to uninstall and try again. I didn’t install any plugins this time, but still no images.

In fact, there are no icons in the dashboard menu. I hadn’t even noticed that before because I was so intent on the editor buttons. What has happened to images in WordPress 3.7?

I thought you said this was a brand new installation?

NGG has had MAJOR problems – so if that’s the plugin, yep, likely.

There’s been one reported bug with image captions in the Visual editor – but that’s not what you are seeing at all.

I’ve not seen any other 3.7 image issues – except related to themes or plugins.

I had the gallery plugin “gmedia gallery” in a previous installation – had the image problems – uninstalled that site – reinstalled fresh 3.7 installation without any plugins and now no editor buttons and no icons in the dashboard.

I took a screenshot of the admin page with the editor, but I don’t know how to post it.

You can’t post an image here – you need to post to your site or to an image hosting site and then post the link here.

So this site isn’t a brand new (never used) installation – files and database? Sorry, just trying to be sure we are on the same page.

Yes, this is a brand new site, new database fresh out-of-the-box virgin.

Sorry to be so dense. That is a very round-about way of showing an image, but not difficult once you’ve explained it. I had to use the dd764.org site since the rossamcginnis.com site doesn’t work yet. Thanks.

Here’s the link to my screenshot:

Aha – now I got it too! Yes, you’re right, it’s WP’s images that aren’t showing up on your site. Found out why too –

Does that ring a bell? Is there a setting on your server for blocking hotlinking?

    Thread Starter feebleTom

    (@feebletom)

Yes, that’s the problem. I do have hotlink protection and I didn’t think to make exception in CPanel for this URL. Now it works.

You’re a genius. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Case Closed. Apparently you have to post and click the “case closed” at the same time. I didn’t.
