At the BuddyPress forums I was told to post here, since I’m using this plugin to create multiple networks.

I want to use forums with BuddyPress but I keep getting the “you do not have the permessions to do this” (or something like that) error screen when I’m trying to active the forums-part. Not getting the BuddyPress menu-item (wp-admin) either.

Is this issue related to this plugin?

    Hi Hiranthi –

Can you post a link to the topic from the BP forums? I don’t believe the issue is related to this plugin, but if you provide that link and some more info on the errors you’re seeing I’d be happy to take a look!

I also want to make sure you know that this plugin will NOT allow you to run separate BuddyPress instances on your networks. BP is a plugin that creates “global” (i.e. not blog-specific) tables, so you can only have one instance per WP install. There is a separate plugin, BP Multi-Network, that is supposed to allow multiple instances, but I have no experience with it.

Without a plugin like that or deep knowledge of BuddyPress, you should not activate it on multiple networks from the same install.

    Hi David,

I don’t think this plugin is related to the issue either, but weirder things have happened, so who knows ??

The BP topic is here: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/cant-enable-forums-inside-buddypress/

Thanks for the Multisite warning. I already have that plugin installed and enabled so I was already aware of it (but if I wasn’t I would be now ;-)).

    Thanks for looking into it.

    Hi Hiranthi –

Haha! Thanks for taking it the right way. Sometimes it’s hard to know what people expect and what they know / don’t know already. ??

I haven’t ever heard of a problem like this. The only thing I could think is to make sure you are the super admin of the network where you’re activating BP and bbP. Beyond that, it should be just like a single network.

I’ll set up a test environment for this to see if I can reproduce this problem, but it’ll be a little while before I get a chance.

No problem, it’s for a private project without a fixed deadline or something (just an “I would like to get this up asap” thought behind it) ??

Oh and I am always logged in as a super admin, so that’s not the issue (unfortunately, that would have made things a lot easier ;-)).

    @illutic,

Here is how I resolved this problem:

    1. WordPress with Multisite enabled and configured.
    2. At the Network level install BuddyPress but do not edit wp-config to enable multi-blog. This means that BuddyPress install at the Network level for the primary site.
    3. Network Activate and run the BuddyPress configuration.
    4. Run the Forum configuration,
4a. Copy bp-config to your root folder (the same one that wp-config is in) ? not sure about this….
    5. Enable BuddyPress multi-blog https://codex.buddypress.org/developer/developer-docs/using-multisite-with-buddypress/bp_enable_multiblog/
    6. Optional: For my installation I wanted completely separate BuddyPress sites on the sub sites so I installed BuddyPress Multi Network (Brajesh Singh version) https://buddydev.com/plugins/buddypress-multi-network/
    7. Rerun the BuddyPress config after recreating the pages (which are deleted during the MultiNetwork install).
    8. You know have subsites with groups, forums and activity streams that are completely separate, but, for BuddyPress Multi Network future groups and forum plugins can be problematic with bleeding between the sites..

IMHO, this is a complicated setup requiring lots of testing.Test, test and then test again.

Let me know if this works for you.
