I set up the multisite installation under a primary domain, domainX.com

I have five other sites on the network, siteA.com, siteB.com, siteC.com, etc.

Now when I try to visit siteA.com (or any of the other networked sites), I’m redirected to domainX.com with HTTP status 302 (moved temporarily).

There’s an exception: if I’m logged in to the network admin under domainX.com, four out of five of the networked sites load as they should. (The fifth continues to incorrectly redirect.) But when I log out, they all go back to being broken.

I’ve had this multisite network set up for eight months or so. This problem appears to be recent, and intermittently resolves. I know the network was working as recently as the 18th (three days ago), because my security plugin sent a notification of an intrusion attempt to one of the networked domains on that date.

I’ve uninstalled plugins, I’ve flushed my own computer’s DNS cache, and yet the problem remains. I’m stuck. Hoping one of you multisite geniuses recognizes the problem and can point out a quick fix. Thanks!

Can you share the REAL domains? We may need to see this and trace it to debug.

    Have you checked DNS routing?

    Thank you Ipstenu,
I was trying to save myself the embarrassment, but sure. I’d rather get it back up & running.

Egads, that said, I just checked and they’re all working again at the moment. As I mentioned previously, this issue appears to be intermittent. Perhaps being logged in was a red herring.

Please feel free to check these domains when you have time, and see if any of them redirects to mardescowebdesign.com instead of loading as it should:

    https://www.cpaolympia.com
    https://www.yogaolympia.com
    https://www.salemfamilydental.net
    https://www.lawyerforlacey.com
    https://www.dermatologyolympia.com

The redirect appears to be a server-side response, I don’t think it’s a DNS issue. I checked dnsstuff.com and got mostly passes, correct nameservers are listed.

So bizarre that it works intermittently. I’m torn now, because I really just want the sites to stay up and running; but I’d like you to be able to see the problem in action and hopefully suggest a fix that will permanently prevent it from recurring.

What do you think, blame shared hosting? If you can’t replicate it and it doesn’t recur within a day or two, I’ll mark the issue resolved. If it does recur, please let me know if there’s additional information I should provide.

    Well, I appreciate it. Thanks!

As of this morning, I can confirm that four out of five of the sites are down again. Salem Family Dental is the only one that loads. The other four all redirect incorrectly.

So they all load for me right now, of course.

However you said you’re on shared hosting. I never recommend anyone run a Multisite on shared. Among other things, it’s lack of control, but really you’re running six websites on hosting meant for one. A lot of hosts don’t even allow it on shared anymore.

I think you’re right in that it’s your hosting, possibly the way the vhosts are set up. Does your shared IP change ever?

    Hi Ipstenu,
Thanks very much for your help on this.

To answer your question, I’m not paying for a static IP, but I don’t think the server’s IP address has ever changed since I set up the Multisite network. My web host actually offers a Multisite auto-installer via Softaculous, so I’m sure it’s not prohibited.

The issue continues to recur intermittently, but I can’t identify a pattern. Sometimes the sites load properly, sometimes they redirect to the root account; and why they do it sometimes but not others is beyond me. I will say, I never saw this problem until after the upgrade to WP 3.7. However I simply don’t have enough information to definitively determine a causal relationship. For example, could the issue have affected other visitors before the upgrade, even though I didn’t see it myself? I have no way of knowing.

Without more to go on, I will accept the “blame shared hosting” answer and mark this question as resolved, especially since you were unable to replicate the issue. Thanks very much for making the effort! Have a great day.
