You need to change your localhost port to 80

You cannot use any other port number.

thank you for the quick reply BUT in the directions “create a network” it says wordpress uses a port number other than ‘:80′,’:443′.
Anyway where do I go to change the port to 80? what file do I look for to change?

You cannot create a network in the following cases:

    * “WordPress address (URL)” is different from “Site address (URL)”.
    * “WordPress address (URL)” uses a port number other than ‘:80’, ‘:443’.

    Please read the full sentence.

in plain english, this means you *must* use port 80 (windows) or port 443 (Macs).

Rather than messing with your port number, note the first message you got which was

You cannot install a network of sites with your server address.

Make a fake domain name in your hosts file. Use that for the install.

I still need to know how to change the port to 80
Sorry guys I am green at this but I will make it up

Even if you change the port number, you cannot use it in the address for multisite.

Do what I said – make a fake domain in the hosts file. So it’s localhost.something, or cake.pie, or my.machine. Or mysite.loc.
