I am new to WordPress but have gotten the hang of general things through a lot of WP re-installation on my web host (about a dozen WP reinstalls now).

After reinstalling WP 4.1 and going through my usual installation, configuration to get multisite up along with subdomains I encountered something real confusing and I am sure it was not like this before or maybe I am seeing it from the wrong way.

For example, the Plugin page. I select all plugins and under bulk actions I select Network Activate and apply. Then I proceed to my WP subdomain sites and there is no plugins available there. If I however select all the plugins again from the admin page and bulk apply Network Deactivate, the plugins are then available in the WP subdomain sites.

The same thing applies for the themes. Am I just not seeing something or have things been swapped around?

The auto install script from my web host provider just sucks or is buggy.

Manual installation resolves a lot of problems and issues.

Encountered new issues with 4.1 but simply deleting the blank spaces on wp-config.php resolves them all. Strange little bug.

Thought it was fixed but only for the themes. The Plugin page is still crossed.

Screenshot taken at the same time. It works, but a little confusing and annoying.

That automatically activates it on all sites and you are unable to deactivate it on a single site.

    It IS a little confusing!

If you want to make some plugins available only to specific sites in your network, try Multisite Plugin Manager.

The Network Plugin Auditor is also really handy to see which sites are using each plugin (and theme).

Ohh that is some really useful information and tools hvianna!!!

Thanks for that. Going to give it a shot and hopefully that helps clear some confusion for me. Fingers crossed I won’t need to start from scratch again this time around…

To explain this behavior, anything network activated does not show on the plugin pages per site, but actually are active on the subsites. Since they cannot be deactivated per site, when you network activate, they have to remain hidden to prevent stupidity.

The same thing applies for the themes. Am I just not seeing something or have things been swapped around?

That should not be the case. A network activated theme should show as available for use on all sites, but WOULD NOT be the ‘in use’ theme.

Activate is a terrible word :/

Yes, I realized that now after flaffing around and all. It is slightly confusing with the wording and lack of documentation but some trial and experimentation and a slight play on the wording begins to make sense.

Thanks all for clearing this up. So far so good.
