NetBlog plugin 1.5 disrupts widgets and sidebars

    Benjamin,

    When I upgraded to NetBlog 1.5.1 from 1.4.4, my widgets went haywire. I was unable to undo the damage until I had deactivated and deleted NetBlog files and data.

    Some widgets I had in one sidebar were bounced to another sidebar — my theme has 9 sidebars. Other widgets disappeared entirely. Some widgets were more helpfully bounced to the Inactive Widgets tray so their settings were preserved, in those cases.

    Before upgrading, I had 30-odd widgets in 9 sidebars and settings in each, so I lost a fair amount of configuration work when the widget bomb went off on upgrade to 1.5+. I did not back up everything before clicking through the automatic upgrade to the plugin — my bad, I should have checked what all the changes were and seen potential conflicts in advance.

    I’m using a child theme of BuddyPress Daily 3.4, https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/buddypress-daily-theme on WP 3.0.1 multisite with BuddyPress. I don’t expect NetBlog to support this or all themes, I’m just reporting the issue. Love NetBlog and hope to get it back someday!

    Many thanks for your great interest in NetBlog! And I am sorry for any troubles you had when trying to upgrade.

    To begin with, it won’t be easy to find the problem without having the source code of BuddyPress Daily (for subscription only), or without the name of your BuddyPress plugin and theme.

    Netblog 1.5 comes with a custom widget area, Post Footer Widget Area, which makes it possible to display links from Further Reading and Referenced By directly below your article. Previously, such links could only be listed in your sidebar. (upon some user requests)

    Technically speaking, Netblog creates a dynamic sidebar with the id “post_footer”. All registered widgets in this sidebar will be printed below your article.

    Therefore, I suspect an interference of widget names or ids, which have to be unique. Can you find “post_footer” in any source code file in your current WordPress installation directory, except Netblog?

    I’m having nearly the same problem. I’ve set up a multi-author site at https://www.knowabit.com . I’m using the Genesis framework with the News theme.

    I’ve only tested your plugin, which I would dearly love to be able to use, on one post: How to Make Gluten-Free Gravy. When I did this, most of the sidebar was fine, but from the Popular Posts widget on down, everything was half width when the plugin was on.

    I don’t know if that helps trouble-shoot it or not. I will take a look through and see if it’s in Genesis, because I’m sure you really don’t want it to be conflicting with one of the most popular frameworks out there!

    The problem with widgets and sidebars might have been solved in Netblog 1.5.3, which unified its option names (not to interfere with other plugins) and changed its sidebar id (which might have been the problem). Anyway, you can disable Netblog dynamic sidebar in Settings -> Netblog -> Advanced.
