• In the process of cleaning up a base64 hack on my WP install, I noticed the wp-content folder contains a sub-folder called wp-content. It appears to be pretty barebones, with only a plugins folder that contains askimet, and a themes sub-folder that contains classic and default themes. None of the contents appear to be malicious, but I removed them nonetheless, with no adverse effects. Are these left-overs from previous versions of WP? I don’t see a wp-content sub-folder inside the wp-content folder in the 3.3.1 WP install.

BTW, I also found a nested wp-includes folder inside the — you guessed it — wp-includes folder. I removed this folder (tons of files I didn’t have time to review) and my site is functioning properly.

    … and a wp-admin folder inside the wp-admin folder.

There should be no nested folders.

Thanks, they’re gone now. They looked pretty clean/benign, though I didn’t go down into every sub-folder. Timestamps dated back to 2008, but I’m beginning to think that means nothing. Is this nesting another hacker’s trick?
