Nested Shortcode Loop

I’m developing a theme that contains custom widgets which output shortcode. I had a situation recently where I placed the shortcode for a content block within its own content. The result was an infinite loop that timed out any page evoking that block.

Is there a way to disable shortcode within shortcode? Within the plugin or otherwise?
