• Hello! I’ve only been using WordPress for a few months and am using the Twenty Fifteen theme with a lot of custom code modifications that I paid a web developer to write for me. However, since then one of the WordPress version updates broke a lot of my code, causing a bunch of formatting issues and a generally ugly site. I had to pay another web dev to fix all of the errors, which has been expensive.

What can I do to prevent this from happening again? I can’t pay somebody to fix my site every time there’s a version update.

Any guidance would be hugely appreciated! Thank you.

Did the developer directly modify the 2015 theme? That’s a mistake. Modifications should be made in a child theme to protect them from updates.

Thanks for the response! Based on the “at a glance” section of the dashboard, it looks as if he didn’t–do you know if that’s a relatively straightforward thing I can ask them to fix, or am I looking at another big money sink?

    Cheers, thanks again!

Short term fix — change the version number of the theme in style.css to something like 999.99 and it won’t update again.

Wow I never thought of that or knew it could be done that way! Thanks Steve. (learn something new almost every day)
