Need to install new WP site in subdirectory, and keep current WP site in root

  • I have always created new sites in subdirectories of the root, even with a WordPress installation in that root directory. There has never been a conflict before. I created a site two weeks ago and it worked fine.

    Today I tried to install a new site, and got this error message:

    ‘The file ‘wp-config.php’ already exists one level above your WordPress installation. ‘

    And that file does exist in the level above, but I want to use the one in the current level, as I always have. Is this not an option anymore?
