In the previous version we could add a search filter prior to the plugin doing the scan so that we could find and list only specific blocks.

That’s the main reason folks use this plugin – to find specific blocks.

Please bring back the filter prior to running the scan so we don’t have to sort through a list.

Also, for the settings of Low, Standard, and Ultra, if you set it to Low and it scans 10 posts, if you do another scan, does it start with those same 10 posts again or go to the next 10?

    Hi @blogaid,

    Filters:

The reason that the scan is only filterable afterwards, is because the block names unknown before hand.

Did you see the “Block Provider” option? This option will select a specific plugin and list the related blocks. There’s also the search box if you know the exact block name.

    Scan:

If you select Low, 10 posts will be scanned at a time. Once those 10 are done, it will scan the next 10 posts until all posts have been scanned.

The re-scan will go through all posts again.

I agree that it is useful to have the search filter before a complete scan of the site and hope you might reconsider.

We are glad to know this plugin has not been abandoned since we use it all the time. So thank you for keeping this plugin updated!

I also relied on a search filter prior to a complete scan for all my clients. I hope you might reconsider. While I can appreciate a low search option, how I use it is to see the impact (# of occurrences) of a specific block throughout the whole site which I cannot do with this new way of it working.

Grateful it has not been abandoned. Thank you for your consideration.

    Hi everyone,

Thank you for the kind words ??

I had another look at the previous version to understand where you are coming from.

I’ll try to clear up what’s going from the technical perspective.

    Previous version:

“Scanning” would happen when the page loads. The scan attempts look all posts on the WordPress site at once. By the time you see the Find My Blocks page, the scan has already happened.

This would be fine on small sites as you won’t notice the scan at all. You’d simple search for the blocks that have already been detected in the posts.

However, attempting to scan all posts at once on larger sites, or cheap hosting would result in WordPress crashing (White screen & unresponsive site).

    Current version:

The scan is broken up into batches to ensure the server doesn’t get overloaded. The scan still cover all posts and their blocks.

There’s another topic open right now for larger sites (with an optimized beta version available).

One of the people has a site with: Total blocks detected: 77,187 in 63,481 locations (posts). This type of scan is now possible, even on a live site with visitors at the same time.

I hope that clears up what’s going on. Please let me know if it helps, or there’s something I’m missing.

Thank you so much for your explanation of how the plugin works now.

Me and several of my clients used the previous version and had no issue with the scan crippling our hosting resources. Most are on shared hosting, and the ones that had numbers like you posted for the large site are on VPS. We have plenty of RAM for scanning our databases, which we keep super clean and don’t use plugins or such that bloat it. But I can see where that would certainly not be the case for all site owners. So, I understand why you gave a choice of scan size first, and why you are working on a version that can handle super large sites.

I also appreciate knowing that whatever number scan you select, it goes on to the next batch on the next scan.

Thank you for continuing support for this plugin. It is VERY helpful when you need to change/remove certain blocks on the whole site.

I’ll update my tutorial on how to use it.

Good resolution. Looking forward to that tutorial.
