I had a developer create a home page/landing page for a new business. She used WP and created a theme and a static landing page.

We now want to give our site a new look and use WP ourselves. I’ve downloaded a new theme and created the pages. Problem is…the old landing page is still there when you type in the main URL.

My question is how can I make the home page I have now the ‘official’ home page and get rid of the ‘home’ page the developer created.

I currently have the site “under maintenance” and want to get it back on line as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance for your help!

What do you have set as the front page under settings->reading?

Front page displays as a static page
    Nothing is selected under that

Set that to the page you want to be the the new home page.

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. Somehow the work that the developer did always comes up. My theme does not. However, if I navigate to another page I have created, the themed page does show. It is like the page the developer did is hard coded in.

Does your theme have a template, front-page.phg or home.php? If so, those templates control what’s on the front page.

but you said you downloaded a new theme. Have you activated it?

I have activated the theme. Should I delete the theme she created?

    Well, make a backup first.

I made a back up yesterday, so am good with that. Would deleting the theme make that page go away?

No, because that theme is no longer active, so it no longer controls the site. Soemthing else is going on.

Install the plugin “show current template” to see what template is being used to display your home page.

    Thanks. It says Template: index.php

IF it’s the the directory for your current theme, you need to look into how you created this theme. When you say “the old landing page is still there when you type in the main URL.” what does that mean, exactly?

    Steve,
Thank you for your patience! I figured out what was happening. I had installed the Multiple Themes plug in and it needed to have the new theme selected for the Home Page.

I would not have figured this out had you not suggested the “show current template” plug in.

    Thanks for the help!!
