I need to upload a new version of a Pdf file to the media library, but must keep the link address to the old file as it has been printed in a hardcopy book. How can I change the new file address to match the old file address please?

Rather than uploading the file containing the new content from your dashboard, just use your ftp client or the file manager located in your hosts control panel to simply replace the old version of the .pdf file with the new version. Make sure the new file is named exactly the same name as the old one. The path / links to the file will not change.

Thank you Clayton, unfortunately the original file has been deleted from the Media library, so that is not an option.

Sure it is.. You said you have a published link to the old file that you wanted to update, correct? If you have a link/URL for the the old file, that link contains the entire path to the file location as well as the original file name. A link to the old address tells you where the file was stored (in what directory) and what its name was. All you have to do is name the new file the same, and then manually place it back in the same location as the original using your ftp client.

Thank you again, I am not using a ftp client but building the site online, so links are assigned automatically or within the parameters of the Permalink. Is there away I can access the files directly them I could create my own link address?

Currently I am being assigned a link with a new date code in the address.

Are you self-hosted (as in; your site and hosting account is with BlueHost, GoDaddy, ASO for example) or is your site hosted on wordpress.com?

Can you provide a link to your site or tell us just the domain name?

    Do you want the logins?

    Do you want the logins?

No, that’s not needed, thanks. I just wanted to make sure you were self hosted – which it appears that you are. That’s a good thing! You should NEVER give those out to anyone online, by the way -not everyone has good intentions! ??

If you aren’t familiar with using FTP, it’s one of the tools used to move files to and from your web space with very little restriction. Here is some good info on FTP clients, and how to get started using one: FTP Clients

In the meantime, you can use the file manger located in your hosts control panel to upload and download files instead. The file manager should have an interface that will feel familiar, and they are usually pretty intuitive.

Log into your hosting account and find your way to the “file manger” options. Then you can navigate to the location where the old file used to be located and upload the new one to the same spot. Your web host should have some information in their user FAQ or knowledge base that can guide you through the steps to get FTP setup for your website (if you want to) as well as instructions for how to access and use the file manager in your control panel.

Yes I do know FTP file management. I don’t actually hold the hosting account, so I will speak to them.
Thank you again for the help.
