• I have a page that I would like to “change” to be a post. I know I can’t just simply change it. So here’s what I want to know:

If I copy and paste the contents from the page to a new post and give it the same URL, and then delete the page AND remove it from the trash, will the URL now take people to the post or will everything be screwed up?

I don’t remember why I made the article a page in the first place, but it really doesn’t make sense for it to be a page. However, I don’t want to mess everything up so that people can’t reach the article anymore. There are links to that URL all over the place.

I appreciate any help/advice anyone can offer.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • The first thing to consider is how the new post will be displayed. Does a post display exactly as a page does – as far as the design and layout are concerned?

    If so, then:

    1. Making sure to use the TEXT (HTML) tab for the old page and the new post, just copy it’s contents to the new post.
    2. Publish the new post using a similar, but differing slightly URL.
    3. Create a redirect rule in your .htaccess file or use a plugin to do same. (Remove any references to page in the menu is a good idea too)
    4. Done.

If the design and layout of posts and pages are differing, you need to review why that is, ie, theme, plugins, and consult them on how to do so.

    Hi @kaityf

You can use a redirection plugin when you make these types of changes or delete pages. This way you will not hurt your SEO if the pages are indexed in google.

If it is a fairly new page it may not be indexed yet but it is best practice to redirect.

Pages and posts display the same way in terms of layout, etc. By looking at them, you wouldn’t know which is a page and which is a post.

In some cases – when I discovered I had posts with similar topics, I have redirected one post to the other post. That makes sense since they both already existed.

But that’s not the case here. Does Google actually know the difference between a WordPress post and a WordPress page? Does it consider more than the content and the URL? So if the URL https://www.mysite.com/existing-article was indexed already by Google (which the URL in question is), Google would need to re-index the exact same URL simply because it now leads to a page rather than a post?

I’m trying to understand the need to re-direct in this case rather than just create a post with the same URL and then delete the page and remove it from the trash.

I’ll check out the plugin for switching post types. Thanks.
