A friend of mine is running a “successful” blog in Berlin that we are now looking to start SEO optimize and hopefully also monetize some on.

They have been using Yoast (premium) and the current setup is that the url slugs contains the date formats for their blog posts. Example:
    https://berlinlovesyou.com/2017/08/16/michelberger-hotel-tandoori/

If we would change this as I imagine it would help CTR and SEO for the site (or?)
Would I have to re-direct every page using 301s to the new posts not containing the dated slugs? Manually it would be a nightmare And they have a lot of organically acquired links (all of them actually) we wouldn’t wont to loose the juice from.

Any feedback, experience with this or thoughts are much appreciated.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Using dates in your URL never had many benefits so it’d probably be a good idea to remove the dates from permalinks (specially if the blog is relatively new). Please, read this post for other permalink considerations: https://yoast.com/wordpress-seo-url-permalink/

If you decide to change your permalinks and want your old permalinks to be redirected automatically, you will need to follow the steps provided on this post and use the permalink helper. This tool will generate a redirect rule that you’ll need to add to the the top of your .htaccess file. You can locate your .htaccess file by going to “SEO > Tools > File editor”.

As your friend has Yoast SEO Premium, please contact personal support if you have any other questions or doubts.
