Hi Derp,
I develop exclusively in WordPress these days and most of the themes are either custom created by me, or purchased from sources such as https://www.codecanyon.net and https://www.elegantthemes.com.
I like some developers more than others. When I get their themes, the code makes sense, rather than me trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Additionally, their functions and shortcodes are such that they rarely conflict with other plugins one might install. Elegant Themes provides a very consistent experience and editing theme files goes smoothly. They also have a very busy support forum.
Here is a recent law site developed with a code canyon theme:
https://lovelandfamilylawattorney.com/
When perusing Code Canyon for theme ideas I make a habit of bookmarking themes that have a layout or function I may find useful in the future. It speeds up the process of finding a suitable starting point for the next client.
I find a lot of patience is required. Looking for what font is being used and finding the right theme seem to take a similar, patient and methodical approach.
Finally, I keep a list of designers who are much more creative than I whom I might call on for a custom creative design. A couple I like are:
Space Between
Emphasis Creative
Tinker Works Creative
