• Hello,

I need to have my site upgraded to the latest version of WordPress (4.0.1). That website has custom code, developed by a contractor, with major modifications to the Wpzoom Tribune theme. The WordPress version currently used for testing.laughandheal is 3.8.5. I have not updated the permalink structure. Please list the high-level steps of an approach for the upgrade so I can intelligently evaluate detailed bids from contractors.

    Thank you so much!

    Steve

Generally you can just upgrade in the dashboard but give this a read first.

Thank you for taking time to reply. However, there is the following warning on that webpage that motivated me to post to this forum and get some detailed advice on how to proceed with the upgrade.

WARNING: The upgrade process will affect all files and folders included in the main WordPress installation. This includes all the core files used to run WordPress. If you have made any modifications to those files, your changes will be lost.

Theme files will be unaffected, it is core files that will change (Anything in the wp-admin and wp-includes directories). If there are modified core files you need to:
    1) Never use that contractor again, and
    2) figure out what modifications have been made so they can be rewritten to work with the new version.

I am confused about the response I got from cloisel versus from support team of my hosting company. Below are their responses, followed by my original request. Please tell me which of the two responses are correct. Thank you! Steve

    MY ORIGINAL REQUEST

    CLOISEL’S RESPONSE
Theme files will be unaffected, it is core files that will change (Anything in the wp-admin and wp-includes directories). If there are modified core files you need to:
    1) Never use that contractor again, and
    2) figure out what modifications have been made so they can be rewritten to work with the new version.

HOSTING COMPANY TEAM RESPONSE (English grammar not the best)
Also please note when you upgrade the wordpress version there no changes affects on wp-contents and settings related to the same.

Until and unless you wont make changes in .css files. Also make sure with developer that there is no changes have been done apart from wordpress theme files.

They are saying the same thing I was saying, that the wp-content directory and theme files will be unaffected by the upgrade. What you need to be sure of is that no core files have been changed.
