I have WordPress installed and connected to my domain; however, I am presently wanting to use an FTP program called FileZilla to upload some of my html files.

When I open my FTP program, connect it to my domain and look to the right, I find the “public_html” I’m suppose to put my files into. When I open that file these are the folders I find:

    cgi-bin
    http
    http:
    motdaugrnds.com
    wp-admin
    wp-content
    wp-includes

My host, BlueHost, told me this:
“The cgi-bin folder is a default server folder. wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes are for wordpress. the http, .http: and motgaugrnds.com folders were not added by us.”

    My question is:
What are these wp folders to be used for?

  • Hi motdaugrnds,
Those folders containt the files that WordPress needs to function. For example, the wp-admin contains the files needed for your admin panel to function and wp-content is where your themes and media (like photos) get uploaded to. They do a lot more than that, but you certainly need to leave those on your server for WordPress to function.

However, these wp- folders may not be used IF they are not in your web root. I see that you mentioned http and https folders, and those could be your web root, but confirm with your host first before modifying or deleting any files. Deleting those wp- folders in your web root will cause WordPress to stop working.

    Hope that helps!

    Thank you bwmaker,

BlueHost just sent me an email telling me about the same thing you just said. They suggested I delete the http, http: and motdaugrnds.com folders, stating they did not place those there and have no idea what they would be used for and that the wp folders are for WordPress usage.

Also, FileZilla told me something similar, saying they do not put any files into my program and suggested the 3 mentioned here be deleted and watch to see if they show up again….I, thus, deleted the http, http: & the motdaugrnds.com folders. They haven’t returned.

I’m not sure what a “web root” is; however, I’m thinking if the 3 mentioned in this post had anythng to do with such an important piece of the program, BlueHost would have told me to leave them, which they didn’t.

Now I’ll do some uploading and see what occurs….

    Another question while here:
I’m using FileZilla FTP to upload html files I’ve created myself; however, I’m wanting to set up a WordPress blogg as well as a WordPress store in the near future. Is doing so in WordPress compatible with the FileZilla program OR do I need to find a way to set up a store and blog using the FZ instead of WordPress?

    You’re very welcome, motdaugrnds.

To explain web root: This is the folder where your domain name leads to. So if you type https://youdomain.com/index.html into your web browser, you will be taken to the index.html file in your web root, if the file exists, of course. Based on what you’ve posted above, you’re in the web root when you log into your FTP. This is a good thing. Does that make sense?

FileZilla if just a program to move files from your computer to your server (BlueHost) so yes, FileZilla and WordPress have no compatibility problems. After you download the files from WordPress to your computer, you would then use FileZilla to move them from your computer to your server. Think of FileZilla as a cargo train that can move files back and forth between your computer and your server. It doesn’t do anything more than that.

Since your on BlueHost, take a look at their tutorial for installing WordPress. It looks like they have an installer that will take care of all the hard work for you and you may not even have to use FileZilla!

This is clear; so I’m starting a different thread to pose my next question. Thank you Brandon for helping with this thread.
