Near the end of the referenced article, check out footnote 14. There needs to be a non-breaking relationship — like super-glue — between the end of the sentence and the superscript “14.” Otherwise, as you see, the footnote starts on a new line, which is weird.

Can you help with this? Is there perhaps a setting in WordPress that prevents this kind of break across lines? Thanks!

    Hi there,

Easy Footnotes outputs the element inside of a <span> and <a> element. All of which are inline elements that shouldn’t break to a separate line. It may be that something in your theme styles is making one of those elements display: inline-block;.

I wasn’t able to recreate the issue on your site playing around with the screen sizes and editing the text to make it long enough to where it would break, but the superscript stuck with the word regardless. So hopefully you’ve already been able to figure out the issue you were having.

Let me know if that’s not the case.

Thanks for your reply! I’m very much an amateur when it comes to HTML, but if you don’t mind I’ll ask some follow-up:

    1. When you say inline elements “shouldn’t break to a separate line,” I’m a little confused. Don’t all separate words break to a new line when they come to the end of a line (even when they’re under the default “inline” code)?

    2. You say that, for you, the superscript stuck with the word regardless — but that’s the result I can’t get for Footnote 14 no matter what browser I use. The superscript detaches itself from the preceding word (which is “started.”) every time.

    3. I searched the page source and couldn’t find “inline-block” being generated by the theme.

    4. There must be something that makes your footnote superscripts “stick to” the preceding character, almost as if the browser regards them as part of the word that ends with that character. For example, footnote 8 in the same article stays with its word as it should.

So, alas, I have not been able to figure out the issue, which is still happening for me.

    Thanks!

    1. Inline elements without a space between them should be looked at as a single element. I’m not completely aware of the intricacies of punctuation and quotes in that sense though.

    2. Here is a screenshot of what I see on footnote 14 at the link you shared. https://monosnap.com/direct/E1k0KuFBoeNYZsj5u4ZsWzq0HJ9GPT

    What browser are you using?

    3. Just to do some testing I was playing around with adding additional characters to the footnote to see what happened when it hit the edge. I did it with 11 since that was closest to the edge in my view and it jumped to the next line along with the quote and word before it. Here’s a video showing that https://monosnap.com/file/11qRrFH3HYIh1NQFIP0tR4zaAvY7LT

    4. It’s definitely an oddity. If I could recreate it I could provide more useful feedback. It may be an inconsistency across browsers. So if you could let me know what you use I can try to take a look.

I’ve check out Tom’s page and it looks fine from MACs/PCs using Safari, Firefox, ie and Chrome. What changed?

Thank you so much, Jason (and tradernet) for your efforts. I’ve since made some changes in body type size, which may have helped clear up that particular instance. I’m just going to write it off as an oddity, not something that needs any more effort. Meanwhile, Jason, your explanations are so helpful. I appreciate your attention to my issue, small as it might have been.

I have the same problem. Happens in Firefox, not Chrome or Edge. Don’t know how to fix it.

Hi @lunis do you have a link available where I can see the issue?

    (@lunis)

    Sure. See here: https://www.eftertrykket.dk/2019/03/24/moralens-vogter-mediemisbruget-af-kosovo-katastrofen/

Happens with footnote 23 for example – on Firefox – when I gently shrink the browser window.

Thank you for looking into it.

@lunis could you let me know what operating system and version of Firefox you’re on? I’m not seeing the issue with Firefox 65 on macOS Mojave.

    Lunis

    (@lunis)

    Firefox Quantum 66.0.1 (64-bit).

    Windows 10 Prof (1809; 64 bit).

The problem has been there forever (since Win 10 1703 and FF 56 at least).

@lunis I’m not able to get the footnote “23” to break onto it’s own line. Here’s what I’m seeing: https://monosnap.com/file/QHg0pHQwa9OTnv3HbLbqpsmdF2dxyh

I’ve tried scaling all the way down to a mobile browser and the last word of the sentence and the footnote superscsript always break to the next line together.

Could you share a screenshot of what you’re seeing and let me know the browser size?

    Lunis

    (@lunis)

    Yes. Screenshot: https://herlevgymdk-my.sharepoint.com/:i:/g/personal/uffe1014_herlev-gym_dk/EXdTA8PhX2lPuL7OqpH9SVwB3TANNAh-K_IjjkLp14DAQg?e=SkT9Fv

I’m not entirely sure about the browser window’s dimensions. But the width is 1354 (see screenshot), right?

This is a tricky one for sure. I’m testing in Windows 10 Firefox 66 as well at 1354 and it keeps the number attached to the last word of the sentence for me. https://monosnap.com/direct/hkEMkQddPWdEc2i9F5SDPZCvfu8F9q
