Need help with thumbnails/sizes not generating

When images are uploaded, certain sizes are not generated which results in blank spots in galleries and in the media library. Clicking regenerate thumbnails causes the system to hang for a while and no new thumbs are added. This doesn’t happen with every image. The images are all optimized before uploading to be under 80k and 800px on their longest side. I am not the end user on this site and this is becoming an issue since the person updating doesn’t check the thumbs and re-upload images that have failed to create thumbs causing blank areas in galleries, featured posts etc.
Please advise… what can be done? The theme is suffusion so there are MANY thumb sizes being generated. I don’t know if that is the issue or not.
