Hey folks. I very stupidly uninstalled my blog thinking I was uninstalling something else (ya I know, my bad!). Anyhow, I managed to save the files from the server (albeit the unistalled version) and I was hoping I could use the data there to rebuild the blog again. Any ideas how if this is not likely. I’ve tried some stuff on my own with no good results and was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for your time.

    Cheers!

  • Do you have the database in that archive?

I should. I just copied all the data as a whole from my servers on to my laptop into a folder. Although I can get around fairly well technically I ain’t too much of a techie, so I am only assuming that I have all the database. Or at best hoping. ??

Well, you need to figure that out…if you have the database, then you can recover…if not, then you are out of luck unless your host has a backup.

So, first step….see if you have the db. If so, post back.

Ok, I am looking at the files now, what exactly should I be looking for. I know you said ‘database’ but is there a specific file name, folder or extension I should be looking for? I am a little ‘novice’ when it comes to this.

    Thanks.

It will probably be a file with an .sql extension. Look in the wp-config.php file in WordPress to see the name of your db and that may help you find it.

Like figaro said, probably a .sql extension. It could also be .csv. Just copying your files an folders via FTP would not get you a database export, though. You’d have to do that separately through PhpMyAdmin or similar software.

AHHHH! Poopsicle sticks! I guess the DB was erased when I unistalled. I checked the wp-config.php file to retrieve the name of the db and I can not find it on my server. I guess I’m out of luck!!! ??

As for reverting or retrieving a back up for my host I’ll have to not do that as I have multiple websites that will be affected and I can’t do that. I guess I’ll have to start from scratch again. Just sad that I lost all my past posts and all.

Thanks guys for your help. Much appreciated!

None of your other websites will be impacted…if you can get your host to give you a backup of your db, (don’t have them restore your site to an earlier point) just have them give you a copy of your db…then you can recover without impacting anything else on your site.

    did you uninstall using fantastico?
If not, you likely still have your db – log in to host’s phpmyadmin and look

Not Fantastico but Simple Scripts. I’ll look again using phpmyadmin but I couldn’t it using another method. I’ll post back in a few.

Oh, I know it could be done but my host said they will only do the restore to the whole account. I’ll see if they can do what you asked and maybe another support person will oblige.

As for the db, I can’t find it in phpmyadmin. ??

Even if it’s not there, you may have backups available to you in your hosting control panel…if you happen to have Cpanel, then it will probably still be in your backup area in Cpanel.

I am trying to download a backup from last week. I think it should do. I screwed my files up on Tuesday-ish (my memory is shaky but it’s definitely this week) so we’ll see. You guys are very helpful! Thanks!

my host fixed it all. it’s a wonder how different results are from one support rep to the next. thanks for all your help gang.
