• I just reinstalled WordPress in the following directory:

    https://www.great-depression2.com/Talk

I created pretty permalinks by going into my Admin page and choosing Permalink Settings > Common Settings > Day and Name.

    It worked.

But I would like to display my posts like this:

    (Uncategorized): https://www.great-depression2.com/Talk/post
    (Categorized): https://www.great-depression2.com/Talk/World/post

So under Optional, I typed in %category% for Category Base, then I created a new post and, with it, a new category, World.

But now I get nothing but 404 errors for both my original (uncategorized) and categorized post.

I read somewhere that it’s advisable to create URL’s in which the date comes before the category. So I guess I’d like my URL’s to look like this: MySite/Talk/2009/1/31/World/post, or MySite/Talk/2009/1/31/Topics/post. Of course, uncategorized posts would lack the category segment (e.g. World, Topics).

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

    Thanks.

Only use regular, web-safe words for the category base (no slashes or percents). This base will only show on category archive pages in place of the default word category.

If you are going to use the category in the post URL, all posts should have a category.

OK, I’m a little more confused and less confused at the same time. I just gained some new insights into categories and tags that made me realize I may not need to fiddle with the URL’s after all. But, judging from your comments, URL’s that reflect categories may play an important role in archives posts, right?

Under Edit Posts on my Admin page, I see how I can organize posts by category, then view the tags for each post. Will my visitors have a similar ability to organize posts by both category and tag, even if the category isn’t reflected in the URL?

I’ll have to read up on archived posts and learn how visitors sort through them.

    Thanks.
