I tried to look through the forum to see if there was a problem similar to mine.

I use Dreamhost as my hosting site.

Okay, so I have to redo a whole website. The site exists, but I’m supposed to redo it from the ground up. So, the first thing I did was go into Dreamhost, make the domain and download WordPress to it. Done.

Second, the site was not on Dreamhost or WordPress yet. So, I waited for the previous designer to transfer me the domain. Now I have the ftp information etc. I’m also able to view the site through Dreamhost and it’s under the domain name I made for it.

Third, I bought a WordPress template from Elegant Themes and as I was about to try and go to (website)/wp-login.php or wp-admin.php I get the 404 error. I go back to Dreamhost to see if WordPress was installed. It says it is.

I must note that the site was not created in WordPress. I want to terminate what is there and use the template to recreate the site.

You say you went to DH and made the domain. So are you also transferring hosting from somewhere else to DreamHost?

I think the previous designer was hosting it locally or something. I wanted him to transfer the whole site and domain to my Dreamhost account.

Before he transferred it, I had already set up the domain on my list including the one-click WordPress install. So when he transferred the site over, I would have it there. Now I have full access to the site through Dreamhost and I’m able to view all FTP files via Cyberduck.

So yes, it was hosted somewhere else, not I have control of it through Dreamhost.

I’m unsure if this answers your question.

It does answer it enough that I think I know where you are.

You’re in via Cyberduck, so do you see his files? If he transferred the files to your domain with us, you should be able to see them. If not, you’ll have to ask him where they are.

Can you share your domain? I can go take a look and see what’s up on your domain if you want.

It’s anthony-smithlaw.com I’m not at the office until tomorrow, so I won’t have the FTP password until then because we keep all files and information on a server there. I just wanted to brush up on it so I can get started in the morning.

I have the FTP login information now whenever you need it.

I don’t need the login info, and please, NEVER give that to anyone! No one from DreamHost would ever need it.

Your domain is still on SiteGround – https://www.whoishostingthis.com/anthony-smithlaw.com – so the only way for you to access it on DreamHost would be to use DreamHosters, our alias system – https://wiki.dreamhost.com/WordPress#DreamHosters

Or you can download all the files from SiteGround and upload them to your DreamHost server, then transfer the DNS to us ??

Alright. I tried to do research on some of the things you said to do. I’m still confused. I downloaded the all the files from the old site through FTP software (Cyber Duck). Not sure if that’s important because I really don’t care about what is on the website right now. I want to totally redo the site even if it includes a day of downtime.

All I care about is using Dreamhost as the hosting site and using that domain name. I am going to use a WordPress theme and site content that I already have to build the site.

    When I go to Manage Domains> anthony-smithlaw.com> Edit>
It says that it’s active and fully hosted.

Do I still need to do what you said to do above?

I really appreciate your help and patience. ??

Also, as I was looking through the WHOIS, I noticed that it still says the previous designer is still the administrator. I paid Dreamhost to transfer over the information and used the eps code that the other guy provided me with. When I did that, Dreamhost says that it’s being fully hosted here and that I’m the administrator. This is really confusing. I really don’t want to talk to the other guy again.

    I’m REALLY sorry I vanished. I had a family emergency ??

You do have hosting with us at DreamHost, but there are two parts to moving a domain over.

One is getting your new hosting (done) and the second is changing the DNS to point to the new host. You have to do the second part. If you log in to your panel and click on the ‘DNS’ button under ‘anthony-smithlaw.com’, you’ll see this message:

To modify your domain’s whois information, please visit the registrar you registered anthony-smithlaw.com with (looks like it’s not us!)

Do you know who you bought the domain name through?

What has to happen is the DNS has to point to ns1.dreamhost.com and ns2.dreamhost.com – Since this has to be done with a different company, we can’t do it for you. If you were to transfer the domain name to us (and not just change the name servers) we could, but again, you have to contact the people with whom you registered the domain.

It’s kind of like moving with your car to a new state. You have to tell the new state all about your car.

Thank you. I was able to get a hold of the other designer. I re-paid the transfer fee and it said my transfer request went through successfully. Now the name servers 1-3 all point to Dreamhost.

Now that I have that done. How do I go about taking down the current design so I can start from scratch with a WordPress theme I purchased?

Like I said before, I don’t intend on keeping anything from the current design. I have all the logos, images, content, etc. and I don’t mind keeping the site down for a whole day while I do my business.

One more thing, when I went back to “whois”, it still says the old information. (siteground.com, etc.)

    Thread Starter VRtrooper

    (@vrtrooper)

Disregard. I have everything working now. I also just read that it takes at least 24 hours to update the whois. Thank you so much for your help.
