• please forgive me as i’m a total newbie and know zero about setting this up…

yesterday I signed up with BlueHost, registered a domain, and installed the wordpress plugin. Bluehost sent me an e-mail with info on how to access my page and files to ftp. my questions are:

-how on earth do i start bloging? is there somewhere in the bluehost cpanel where this is done or is this done somewhere else?

-do i need to install anything else?

-about design – i basically want a simple blog page where people can comment (i.e. https://www.sandhillslave.com)

if anyone can help me, i could give you a donation (via Paypal).

    thanks!

    Well, WP isn’t a plugin. It’s a script/blogging tool.
Where did you install it? In a subfolder?

If you want help with the install – contact me at moshu at transycan dot net.

The design… you’ll have to pick a theme from here, for example: https://themes.wordpress.net/ and install it.

A custom made theme is not a “donation” price… it’s much more!

Well, until you get a feel for this, just access the blog with the info bluehost gave you, in the sidebar you should see a link to “site admin”, click that. It takes you to the backend of your wp install. There’s a tab labeled Write, and another one labeled Manage. If you click on Manage, you’ll see listed the first “hello world” post, and the comment that’s attached to it by Mr. WordPress.

If you want to change the hello world silliness, just click on Edit to the right of the post title, and make the changes. If you want to leave the hello world post and comment alone, then click on the Write tab, which takes you to a blank edit window. The bar of buttons allows you to do various styling things to text that you write into the window. Once you’ve written what you want for a post, you click on the Publish button below the text field.

That should get you started. You want to figure out the basics before you go on to things like themes etc.

    That should get you started.

Yep. If we can find where s/he installed WP ??

thanks that helps. my previous posting was not very explanatory. after i gained access to my cpanel in bluehost, i went through the fantastico section and installed the wp script in my website.

so i think i’m ready to go except that i don’t the see the “site admin” link in the sidebar. i think this is because i’m transferring domain from a previous hosting service (i didn’t have a website setup just the domain name) and they say it could take up to 36 hours to be pointed to the bluehost servers. i do see the “hello world” post and comment but i’m not able to write or edit anything. do you have any other explanations for this?

    thanks again!

do you have any other explanations for this?
We might… if you give us a link to the blog.

You do pretty much have to wait until the DNS change resolves/propagates before you can do much with an install, I’ve found. It’s a PITA. Just keep trying, once the change propagates fully you should be able to access the admin section.

You can also try by adding wp-admin/ to the end of your blog address in the browser addy bar.

well then, i’ll wait. thank you both for putting up with the newbie. here’s the link if it helps illustrate things better. https://70.103.189.89/~smartass

I just have to second what vkaryl said: you’ll have to wait until the DNS change propagates all over the net.
Since the site now is at https://70.103.189.89/~smartass you cannot do anything because it has in the database the ‘future’ location and is looking for stylesheet and admin login at https://smartassery.com/wp-login.php and https://smartassery.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css , respectively.

If you are very eager to access it, and you know your way around MySQl and phpMyadmin… you could temporarily change the site_url and home values in the database to the present temporary address and enjoy it.

But it’s really safest to just wait…. it doesn’t really take long these days (just did a server move: got the email from my host tech at 11:38 am that he’d copied all the files; the DNS changes were all resolved by 3:08 pm).
