    Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking for a free WordPress plugin for embedding a video player on my site that supports video quality switching. I want users to be able to change the video resolution (e.g., 480p, 720p, 1080p) for a better viewing experience, especially when they’re on slower internet connections.

If anyone has suggestions or recommendations for a plugin that supports this feature, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for your help!

    What speaks against YouTube?

    Thanks for the suggestion!

The main reason I’m looking for a WordPress plugin rather than using YouTube is that my videos are courses, and I want more control over my content. With YouTube, I’m worried about my videos being shared or publicly accessible, which I want to avoid for privacy and content protection reasons.

Sorry, but it’s not just a player issue.

The video needs to be hosted on a proper media streaming server that supports adaptive bit rate encoding. Uploading the videos to your standard webserver that hosts your WordPress site isn’t going to cut it.

So you need a proper video hosting service.

If YouTube doesn’t work for your use-case, there are a ton of video hosting services out there, albeit non-free: Vimeo, Wistia, Cloudflare Stream, Streamable, Sproutvideo, etc… just to name a few. All these will support adaptive bit rate, and will have some basic security built-in (including controlling where the video can be embedded). They’ll also have their own player that supports the bit rate switcher you’re asking for.

    Good luck!
