Need Help

I have had a very hard time installing WordPress on a friend’s website. I want to install it in the root directory. I’ve already tried to follow the directions provided in many forms where I change the address in the WordPress admin settings and then alter the .php file, etc., etc. I am using Yahoo webhost and there is no .htaccess file.

Yahoo enables you to activate a WordPress blog from their server which I initially did. I selected to use my blog as my homepage and that did not work. I then tried to just move the installed blog into the root directory following the guidelines provided and that did not work either. Finally, I deleted the files from the server that I could and installed the wordpress files directly into the root folder through Dreamweaver FTP. THis seemed to work. However, now I cannot add pages from wordpress. If I add a page and click on the link/button it has either a blank page or an error 404.

Could someone please help or explain how this happened/how I can fix this? I really don’t know what I’m doing. Also, the previous blog files that were activated through yahoo will not allow me to delete them. I’m very lost!!!
